Everything runs very smoothly under XP but Vista is very very sluggish, although it's inconsistent - sometimes opening a program is as fast as would be expected, often times it's really slow (taking up to a minute). Likewise browsing the file system or copying files could be fast or it could be really slow.

Then Setup runs its final task, a performance test that could take about 5 minutes. If everything goes well, and you're running fairly modern hardware, It really seems like something is amiss here... So it has to be something else in his system (mobo, etc.,) that isn't agreeing with Vista for some reason.

I can see no justification for Vista. Me either. I will not be putting it on my machine for sure. He mainly wanted it for the games (Halo 2 and that). So why put it on his machine at all? The games will run just fine on XP, won't they? Why are you going to the trouble of all this? -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word,

He says it seems really slow and sluggish. Is that a common experience with Vista? Initially, yes. My work computer is pretty fast now, but when I was setting it up, it was sluggish.
